Above is a picture of my two San Diego strain Red Junglefowl that I am breeding in 2007.
San Diego Zoo Strain Red Junglefowl
The San Diego Zoo strain is the easiest strain of Red Junglefowl to keep due to their semi-tame nature and their prolific breeding abilities.
History
The San Diego Zoo strain was descended from a total of 27 birds being comprised of 15 Indian subspecies (G. gallus murghi) and 12 from the Burmese (G. gallus spadiceus). They were released in 1942 kept in a semi-wild state loose on the zoo grounds until the early 1990's when the zoo got rid of them.
About my birds
At this point I only have two pure San Diego Zoo strain hens in my possession. I am breeding them with my Rodney Michaels strain cock in 2007 which should produce some very vigorous chicks. They will not be as tame as pure San Diego Zoo birds but should be more to type as the Rodney Michaels strain is reputed to be one of the purest strains in existence. So far this year this cross is working out well.
Below is a young San Diego Zoo cockerel that was later killed by a hawk.
